Most schools don’t provide enough hours of ABA intervention for the treatment to be effective so families supplement the difference and set up a program in their home. Parents are not only part of the process, but they are in charge of the program and responsible for staffing it and providing all of the materials that are needed.  The first thing a parent needs to do is find and hire a consultant who is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) that specializes in the development of home programs using ABA.

The consultant will work with the parents together as a team to decide what behaviors they want to teach based upon each child’s individual needs.  Together they set goals and develop a plan to achieve them.   The most common behaviors that are targeted with ABA Intervention are language, play, self-help, academics and social skills.  Once a program is developed the parents are responsible for finding tutors to work 1:1 with the child in the family home.  Once a week the consultant will meet with the team and talk about the data, set new goals and provide the necessary training and supervision to ensure the efficiency and reliability of the intervention.
