Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an effective and researched based method of providing treatment for children who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The goal of ABA Intervention is to teach socially significant behaviors which will help the child reach his or her best potential in functional daily living. It involves modifying how information is being presented to the child so that the desired behavior can be acquired and reinforcing the desired behaviors as they occur to increase the likelihood for that desired behavior to occur again in the future. In technical terms this is called the antecedent, the behavior, and the consequence. A big part of ABA Intervention is the data collection. The data shows us whether or not an intervention is working and therapists use this data to make decisions about when and what changes need to be made, if any.
Research has shown us that when ABA Intervention is used the child has a 50% chance of being included in a general education program. This research has shown that the most optimal results occur when the child begins intervention when the child is a toddler and receives therapy 20 to 40 hours a week for two years. |
